What are hot air balloon tethers? 
When you schedule a balloon tether, we bring our hot air balloon to your location (or plan and host your event at our balloonport in Cool Spring, NC) display and/or give brief rides aloft. We use ropes to hold the balloon in place during the tether operation. A balloon tether is classified as a flight operation, and all local and FAA regulations apply. A pre-site visit to the location may be required by the pilot. A contract will be signed. Insurance is included.

How much space is required for a balloon tether?
For a balloon tether, we need an area about the size of a baseball field or 200 feet by 200 feet. This area must be clear of all obstacles of any kind. We must have permission from the landowner to drive three vehicles (SUV, Pick-up) onto the site for one hour prior and one hour past the contracted tether performance time.
How many people can ride in one hour?
On average, we can take the balloon up to the top of the ropes and back down in an average of five minutes. In ideal weather conditions, this means that we could make 20 trips in one hour. If we take 2-3 people on each trip, then you will average 40 passengers in one hour. Also depends on percentage of children, seniors, other specials folks....always weather permitting.

How will weather impact my tether?
We cannot operate in rain or with rain in the immediate forecast, with thunderstorms forecast within 50 miles, and when winds are over seven mph. Keep in mind, we must monitor wind speeds at ascending altitudes when making this decision. We will not operate the balloon in temperatures above 90 degrees, and we will cancel a tether operation if the day is too hot. Early morning and late afternoon are best tether times, just like free-flying. We will make a joint decision about showing up (or not) for your event; however, the pilot-in-command will make the final determination.
